A scientist has confirmed the occurrence of a mythical phenomenon, called tertiary rainbows – three rainbows arcing through the sky at once – with real photographs of the events.

Few people have ever claimed having seen the rare phenomena.

In fact, scientific reports of these phenomena, were so rare—only five in 250 years—that until now many scientists believed sightings were as fanciful as Leprechaun’s gold at a rainbow’s end.

These legendary optical rarities, caused by three reflections of each light ray within a raindrop, have finally been confirmed, thanks to photographic perseverance and a new meteorological model that provides the scientific underpinnings to find them.

In addition to the confirmed photo of a tertiary rainbow, the optical treasure hunt went one step further, as revealed in another photo that shows the shimmering trace of a fourth (quaternary) rainbow.

Michael Grossman and Michael Theusner have snapped photos of tertiary rainbows since last year.

The day Grossman photographed the tertiary rainbow, he first recalled seeing a double rainbow. When the rain intensified, he knew he had to turn toward the Sun.

“It is really exaggerated to say that I saw it, but there seemed to be something,” he said.

The pictures he snapped in the rain were the first to show a tertiary rainbow.

The work is described in a series of papers in a special issue published this week in the Optical Society’s (OSA) journal Applied Optics.

The MOONLIGHT, a solar powered lantern, is built and was designed in collaboration with the rural Cambodians it is made to serve. Over 70% of the country has no access to the power grid, so as a result they have traditionally relied on kerosene lamps after dark for tasks like cooking, eating and reading. Those lamps pose a great fire risk, as most rural homes are built from wood and straw. The MOONLIGHT can be rented in rural areas for less than $.08/day, the same amount traditionally spent on kerosene. These photos were taken in villages around Kandal Province, near the Mekong River, the first area to adapt the MOONLIGHT for everyday use.

Oddly enough, while a current traveling from right to left across the parietal lobe caused improved performance, the same current going left to right reduced test subjects’ skills at math (or “maths” since this is Oxford) to the abilities of a 6-year-old.

Here are the details on the “5 Million Dollars 1 Terabyte” sculpture:

A new exhibit at the Art 404 gallery, 5 Million Dollars, 1 Terabyte, blurs the boundaries of between sculpture and skullduggery, conspicuously displaying a hard drive with $5 million of stolen property.

“5 Million Dollars 1 Terrabyte” (2011) is a sculpture consisting of a 1 TB Black External Hard Drive containing $5,000,000 worth of illegally downloaded files.

Physicists have developed a theory called The Standard Model that explains what the universe is and what holds it together. It is a simple and comprehensive theory that explains all the hundreds of particles and complex interactions with only:

However, unlike Earth’s water-formed channels, Leverington said the large Martian canyons do not feature obvious river deposits and don’t terminate in delta-like, sediment-laden mouths, such as at the end of the Mississippi River.

Instead, they fade into vast plains composed of volcanic basalt, he said.

“We see abundant evidence for past eruptions of lava at the heads of these large systems, for flows along these systems and for extraordinarily large volumes of lava at the mouths of these systems,” he said. “These characteristics are very similar to what we see at volcanic channels on the moon and on Venus.

“There’s really no known process for the rapid eruption of large amounts of water from aquifers to form channels that are thousands of miles long. We do have evidence of this happening through past volcanic processes on the moon and Venus,” he added.
